Dostana 2008 Movie Review

Dostana 2008 Movie Review

Somewhere in the ’80s When Harry Met Sally attempted to answer the question that has plagued every woman and man since eternity – can two persons from the opposite sex be just friends?
This week’s release Dostana also seeks to find an answer to a similar question that has troubled our little globalised and recession-ridden world – can two guys hugging and hanging out with each other ever be just friends? Because it seems like ‘the sex part always gets in the way.’

Of course Dostana is no patch on the Hollywood cult classic. But along the way it does give you enough reasons to laugh out. And when have we demanded anything more out of our (and specifically KJo’s) movies anyway?

It tells the story of Sam (Abhishek Bachchan) a ne’er do well nurse at a hospital in Miami and a hot-bod photographer Kunal (John Abraham) who are looking for an apartment to move into. As luck would have it, they end up at the same house at the same time driving in the very same cab. They are tad disappointed when they are told that the house was not open for ‘baba log’ since there was a pretty young thing staying there.

Not left with much choice they decide to bluff about their sexuality and move in with Neha (Priyanka Chopra). As days pass, the three become great friends and begin spending a lot of time together.

Meanwhile Neha loses her promotion to Abhimanyu Singh (Bobby Deol) who takes over as the boss of the magazine she works for. He assigns her an almost-impossible task, which she completes with a little help from our photographer hunk, and is left impressed.

By the time the tub of interval popcorn makes its way to your seat you realise that the three leading men have fallen for our pretty damsel. Our two ‘gay’ men decide to pull out the daggers and get Abhimanyu out of the way. How and who manages to take Neha home forms the climax of the film.

Dostana bases itself on the premise that one lie can make for a heck of a good film. Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Gol Maal was one such movie as were Mrs Doubtfire, Chachi 420 and I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry among many others. So the Abhishek Bachchan-starrer is no landmark film in any sense. And sure enough you are bound to find influences of all these movies (and many more not listed here) in it.

But what makes Dostana work for me is the sheer chemistry between John Abraham (his lack of expressions notwithstanding) and Abhishek Bachchan. The two seem so perfectly made for each other you begin wishing they were really gay.

What also works is the whole Two Guys and A Girl set-up, which though exciting and very new to most Indian men comes with a lot of strings attached.

The third thing that I could empathise with and therefore perhaps appreciate is how a single man has to lie through his teeth just to find an accommodation in a big city. And it is this one lie that snowballs into such a huge mess that it ends up destroying everything the three protagonists cherish the most.

However what is pi****g off is that the makers have managed to totally waste three brilliant actors – Boman Irani, Kirron Kher and Sushmita Bundela Mukherjee. Boman plays the gay editor of a fashion magazine for exactly three scenes, Kirron plays Abhishek’s ‘full on Punjabi ham scene’ mom and Sushmita is Priyanka’s wannabe model aunt.

Boman has done a much smaller role in Kismat Konnection but at least the character in the film was critical. Ditto for Sushmita (Kitty from Karamchand) who was so convincing as her two-minute performance as the Bengali mom in that horrendous Ugly Aur Pagli. And just what the hell was Tarun Mansukhani thinking while picturising that song on Kirron anyway?

Also to a certain extent the film tends to stereotype gay men, which can be a turnoff. But frankly the film itself is quite enjoyable if you keep the expressionless Bobby Deol out of the scene.

There are some great moments too. However none so brilliant that can make your eyes moist. In fact if there’s something that gets you even close to crying is the shot where John replicates the rain dance scene in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai for Priyanka. But that’s not so much because of John and Priyanka but because all along you’re watching Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol in the backdrop and thinking of the first time you watched Kuch Kuch ten years ago.

All in all Dostana is not such a bad movie after all. It’s been a while since a Karan Johar film has hit the screens. And watching this one reminds you how sorely you’ve missed those candyfloss happy endings.

Verdict:3/5

Dostana 2008 Music Review

Expectations from a soundtrack belonging to a Karan Johar film are straight forward – It has to be nothing but superb. With the kind of music that his films have boasted over the years (Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, Kaal, Kal Ho Na Ho, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai), there is no reason why Dostana should be any different. Add to it names like Vishal and Shekhar who truly understand the pulse of today’s youth and you know that this Abhishek Bachchan-Priyanka Chopra-John Abraham starrer would boast of an entertaining soundtrack all the way.
After listening to Dostana, you know that it is not just entertaining in get-set-rocking mode. Instead it also has its moments, especially when it comes to the soft numbers (there are three of them) and this is exactly where the core strength of Dostana lies. The album has a mix of everything – from dance number to softer tracks – all of it ensuring that Vishal-Shekhar have yet another successful album up their sleeves after Bachna Ae Haseeno, Tashan and Om Shanti Om.
A love song with some unconventional lyrics by Anvita Dutt Guptan, ‘Jaane Kyun‘ is an excellent track that gives Dostana a kick start. If the catchy tune isn’t good enough, it is the singer who comes behind the mike for this youthful track, who surprises the most. He is none other than Vishal Dadlani himself who shows an entirely different facet of his personality. He is confident enough to entrust himself with the responsibility of going solo for this flagship number of Dostana and doesn’t make one feel that any other singer would have done a better job with ‘Jaane Kyun’. A fun number which would find immense popularity all over.
A track which requires just one hearing to be classified as a chartbuster being brought to you on a platter is ‘Desi Girl’. Want some ‘get-on-the-dance-floors’ beats? Vishal & Shekhar get it for you. Need some catchy lyrics to get on your lips instantly? Lyricist Kumaar does the job right for you. Expect the singers to get some powerful energy in their vocals? Shankar Mahadevan and Sunidhi Chauhan along with Vishal Dadlani can always be entrusted to do that. And if you thought that the feel of ‘Deewangee’ (Om Shanti Om) couldn’t ever be matched again, then choreographer Farah Khan is just a call away. Overall, a complete package deal where absolutely nothing goes wrong!
A quintessential Punjabi dance number as far as the tune and arrangements are concerned, ‘Maa Da Laadla‘ is the next to come. However, it is the lyrics by Kumaar which makes the number special as there is a lot being conveyed in this hardcore Punjabi number. If one diverts attention away from the racy tune of this number (which is bound to make its presence felt in the discotheques and clubs) and instead delve deep into the lyrics, you would realize that ‘Maa Ka Laadla’, which has singer Saleem at the helm, is one fun number which would aid the film’s narrative in a big way. Watch out for this one!
Next comes the much hyped item number in Dostana which features Shilpa Shetty jiving along with Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham on the Miami beach. Titled ‘Shut Up & Bounce’, the song may sound like a routine/typical dance number but that doesn’t come in the way of the potential it holds as far becoming popular in days to come. With Sunidhi Chauhan leading from the front and Vishal Dadlani providing additional vocals, ‘Shut Up & Bounce‘ written by Anvita is all set to be an eye candy all the way, courtesy Miss Shetty and other bevy of beauties expected to dominate the frames captured on the Miami beach.
Vishal and Shekhar reserve the best for the end with two extremely soothing numbers bringing Dostana to an end. First to come is ‘Khabar Nahi’ which is just the kind that you wish to put in a repeat mode, switch off the lights, close your eyes and expect the song to make you go for that peaceful sleep. If Vishal excelled as a singer in ‘Jaane Kyun’, one has to hear him in ‘Khabar Nahi‘ where is quite good yet again. A beautiful melody which keeps you smiling away as it plays in the background, ‘Khabar Nahi’ is a love song written by Anvita which also has Shreya Ghoshal and Amanat Ali lending their vocals along with Raja Hasan.
Shaan would indeed consider himself lucky as he is gifted the best tune and lyrics (Vishal Dadlani does an all around show in the album and also contributes with his writing) in the form of ‘Kuch Kum’. A poetic track which moves at a serene pace and has in it the potential to scale the kind of height which the title song of ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’ did (as far as the soothing feel is concerned) ‘Kuch Kum’ is easily the best of the lot and is immensely likeable within first listening itself. It is a kind of number that you don’t really want to over analyze and instead just hear it to enjoy it to the fullest. No wonder, it has the longest duration when compared to the rest and lasts for close to 6 minutes.
Dostana is an excellent album from Vishal-Shekhar and there is not one single number which doesn’t work. In fact if three soft numbers (‘Kuch Kum’, ‘Khabar Nahi’ and ‘Jaane Kyun’) are the pick of the lot then ‘Desi Girl’ is a definite must for the dance floors. ‘Maa Da Laadla’ and ‘Shut up & Bounce’ have their own place under the sun and if the film works well at the theaters (which it should), there is no reason why Dostana won’t go on to match the kind of sales that the biggest albums of 2008 (Race, Singh Is Kinng, Jannat, Tashan, JTYJN) have enjoyed this year.

Dostana 2008 Movie

This is a story about two guys Sameer (Abhishek Bachchan) who is a nurse and Kunal (John Abraham), a photographer. They bump into each other while looking for an apartment to rent and coincidentally head towards the same apartment. However, they are both thrown out because the owner wants to rent the apartment to girls only, since her niece, Neha (Priyanka Chopra) stays in that apartment alone. Sameer gets an idea that if Kunal and he pretend to be gay lovers, then the owner will agree to let them stay. Kunal initially refuses, but agrees out of desperation. Their plan works and they move in. Over a period of time Neha, Kunal and Sameer become good friends, hanging out together and having fun.

The three of them go to the immigrations office to register for residence permit and Neha gives them the idea that if they apply as a homosexual couple they can get residence permit in a year, which otherwise might take 5 to 6 years. Sameer refuses but Kunal manages to convince him and they apply as a gay couple. Sameer later realizes that he mistakenly gave his London address (where his mother stays, and where he previously used to stay) as his home address. His mother (Kirron Kher) receives a letter from the immigrations office and comes to know of her son’s sexuality. One day Neha’s boss ‘M’, short for Murli (Boman Irani) announces that he is resigning his job as the editor-in-chief of Verve magazine and is in charge of replacing himself. In order to impress her boss (who is also gay) and bag the job, Neha invites him for dinner at her house. M agrees when he learns that she lives with two gay single men. As M arrives, Kunal is reluctant to act gay in front of him, so Sameer gets cosy with M. But meanwhile, a gay immigrations officer come for a surprise visit stating that some people fake their sexuality for a faster residence permit. Kunal and Sameer immediately tense up and end up dancing and acting out in front of them. At the same time Sameer’s mother comes home and faints to see her son like this. Later, she cries and screams and is unable to accept her son’s identity. Sameer, tries to tell her the truth but can’t with everybody around. Later at Neha’s office M announces Abhimanyu Singh (Bobby Deol) as the next editor-in-chief. Neha is heartbroken and comes home crying. Sameer’s mother consoles her and says that everything happens for the good. Neha then convinces her to accept Kunal and Sameer’s relationship. The next day, his mother welcomes Kunal with an ‘Aarti ki Thali’ a.k.a Kabhie Khushi Kabhie Gham. She blesses them and leaves asking them to take care of Neha as she was upset. Kunal, Sameer and Neha together work out a difficult project she was given by her boss and Neha becomes a hit at her office. Abhimanyu appoints her as the co-editor-in-chief of Verve.

Meanwhile,in Kunal’s absence Sameer takes out Neha to an amusement park as a surprise and they share an intimate time. Later, at a mall Sameer tries to tell Neha he loves her and that he’s not gay through a trial room door, but turns out Kunal was behind that door and heard everything he said. He becomes angry with Sameer and states that he also loves her. As they try to figure out what to do Kunal says that as tomorrow’s Neha’s birthday they should go out to this new cool place he knows, but actually sends him to a male strip bar while he and Neha enjoy an intimate dinner and movie at a park. Sameer comes to know of this and furiously hits Kunal and a fight breaks out which Neha ends. The next day, Abhimanyu asks Neha out to an event and asks her to bring her two friends along. As the trio are dancing to the tunes of ‘Desi Girl’, Abhimanyu enters and sweeps Neha away. Then Kunal and Sameer decide to first eliminate him together. They try telling him to do exact opposite of things that Neha likes and almost ruin their relationship when the truth comes out. Neha thinks that they are doing this as they do not love each other anymore and are falling for Abhimanyu. She states that Abhi is straight and prefers her which the guys happily accept. Seeing that things are not working out, they set their sights on Abhimanyu’s 5-year old son Veer. They show him a tape of (Taare Zameen Par) and convince him that once his dad marries Neha they are going to send him away to a boarding school and that his step mother was going to be very mean and vicious. The next day, Anhimanyu, Neha and Veer go out to a basketball game together to which Kunal and Sameer are also invited. Neha comes to know that Abhi is going to propose to her at half time and asks Kunal and Sameer what she should do as she is not even thinking about marriage yet. Both of them ask her not marry him and reveal that they aren’t gay and are in love with her. Meanwhile Veer tells Abhimanyu of his fears and cries saying that he doesn’t want him to marry Neha. As Neha tearfully turns away from Kunal and Sameer, Abhimanyu hugs her and tells her that they can’t be together as Veer isn’t comfortable with that. Kunal and Sameer see them hugging and presume them to be engaged. Neha comes home and asks the guys to leave the house.

Later, Kunal and Sameer go to the immigration office to get their residence permit and realize that they miss Neha, so they go to get her at an office party that she is attending. They try explaining to her but she refuses to listen and Abhimanyu enters. Kunal asks when they are going to get married and Neha tells him that they broke up because Veer wasn’t comfortable with her. They both tell them the truth and Abhimanyu and Neha furiously try to leave the place. But the guys stop them and get on to the stage and tell the crowd their story and ask them tell Neha to grant forgiveness. The crowd edges them to do stuff like get on the knees and beg to Neha, when one of them asks them to kiss each other . The guys adamantly refuse to do it when Abhimanyu says that since they are very fond of being gay, it is the only way they can be forgiven. Kunal refuses to do it but Sameer convinces him and tries to kiss him but at the end moment he cant do it. As Kunal sees Neha and Abhimanyu starting to leave he forcibly kisses Sameer and Abhimanyu tells Neha that those guys were really her best friends to do this as even he couldn’t have done it, even for her. Neha goes to them and they make up. After two months Neha, Kunal and Sameer are sitting on a bench and Neha asks them if anytime during their act of being gay, they ever felt anything towards each other. They vehemently deny it and Neha leaves apologizing. Sameer and Kunal look at each other and remember their kiss. They, then, part their ways.
