Drona Music Review

The anthem track ‘Drona’ (sung by Dhruv himself) opens up proceedings and it has the kind of sound which just fits in well with the theme of the movie. A number with a Western base to it, it does have an advertisement jingle feel to it but one doesn’t quite mind it due to the comic book spirit of the movie. Narrating the background of ‘Drona’ and how he would be acting as a savior for the rest of the world, ‘Drona’ is a kind of number which appears at numerous junctures in the film. Sunidhi Chauhan version of the same song comes at the album’s end and carries a funky feel to it, courtesy a full on club setting. In both the versions, ‘Drona’ stays on to be primarily situational though and doesn’t even attempt taking a popular route.

The number which does aim at being popular though is ‘Oop Cha‘ which has an interesting orchestra throughout its duration. Different instruments are brought together to give this item number an edgy sound. The number by Sunidhi Chauhan and Nandini Shrikar is foot tapping, yes, but beyond the initial setting ‘Oop Cha’ doesn’t quite turn out to be THE item number which Priyanka Chopra could carry for couple of years or so. The culprit here are the lyrics that do touch upon the philosophy of ‘living life every moment’ but somewhere down the line, they fail to make an impact. ‘Remix version’ sounds good at high volume as well though how one wishes the lyrics could have made a little more impact!

‘Bandagi’ follows next and though it doesn’t promise much in terms of popularity, it is easy on ears nevertheless. While Roop Kumar Rathod is subdued as usual, Sunidhi Chauhan too keeps her pitch low for ‘Bandagi’ which comes across as a laidback love song to be heard with the lights switched off. For those who are fond of ‘ghazals’ and soft music, ‘Bandagi’ is a decent offering though a wide spread reach of the number doesn’t seem feasible.

A number which is seemingly picturised on Jaya Bachchan and the kid (who grows on to be Abhishek Bachchan), ‘Nanhe Nanhe’ is a lullaby that follows next. Sadhna Sargam (with support from Nandini Shrikar) comes up with good rendition in this extremely slow moving number and at places does sound like Lata Mangeshkar from ‘Ek Tu Hi Bharosa’ [Pukar]. A situational track, this is yet another number which derives its value from it’s placement in the film’s narrative.

Finally arrives ‘Khushi’ which is experimental to say the least. With a jazz feel to it, ‘Khushi’ sees quite a few ups and downs during it’s 4 minutes duration even as Suzzane D’mello, Francois Castellino, Dean and Sunaina Gupta give Shaan, the prime singer here, ample support. A conversation song which seems to be picturised on Abhishek Bachchan having fun with his friends, ‘Khushi’ has a lot to look forward in the way it is picturised because audio wise it is not a number that one expects to be sung or played around.

As mentioned in the start, Drona takes an unconventional route for most part of the album and the only place where it does follow the popular trend (‘Oop Cha’), the final result is ‘theek-thaak’. Goldie Behl, Dhruv and Vaibhav have their intentions right in making Drona look and sound different from the league; however while doing so the soundtrack turns out to be the kind which would has it’s chances of making a better impression as a part of the narrative and able choreography/picturisation.

Rock on 2008 Hindi Bollywood Movie Review

More than about music, Rock On is a tale of bonding, a tale of loss, a tale of following one’s heart, and a tale of rejuvenation. It’s a story of four friends who drifted apart when they were just on the cusp of kissing fame.

Aditya (Farhan Akhtar) is a brooding investment banker who’s got riches and a beautiful wife (a gorgeous Prachi Desai ), but no happiness in life. KD (Purab Kohli) is the odd man out at his rich dad’s jewelry firm. Joe ( Arjun Rampal ) sits at his guitar shop and does pretty much nothing except play a few melodies or listen to the endless bickering of his wife Debbie (Sahana Goswami) who’s the sole provider of the family. And Rob (Luke Kenny) takes on odd musical assignments with music directors (Anu Malik plays a cameo), composing for ad jingles.

The four lead their separate lives. But they had something common once – music and ‘Magik’. Yeah, that was the name of their rock band that broke up when they were working on their first album. Ten years later, Aditya’s wife brings the estranged friends together. And Magik is revived. But there are tough choices to be made by the four friends.

‘Rock On’ grips you from its very opening reels when you are introduced to the dull, mechanical lives of the four protagonists. The sense of emptiness is intelligently highlighted by the contrasting flashbacks of their juvenile past when everything was hip and happening, and life was a song.

Director Abhishek Kapoor deserves a solid (if possible, rocking) pat on his back for making such a real and yet deeply moving film. Before anything, Abhishek ensures a tight script with every single character finely fleshed out. Then he has a proper ensemble cast in place. Above all, Abhishek doesn’t falter in the telling of the story. His direction is spot on and he extracts brilliant performances from the cast.

Farhan Akhtar is simply a revelation. Take my word, friends, his performance in the film can put some established stars in our industry to shame. He is stilted and uptight as the business-fixated banker, and he’s charming and lithe as the long-haired singer of the band.

Arjun Rampal has been surprising his critics since his performance in Om Shanti Om . This time, Arjun gives a restrained and stoic performance as a failed musician with incredible tolerance towards his carping wife – played superbly by Sahana Goswami.

Purab Kohli provides ample comic relief as the band’s ‘killer drummer’. Luke Kenny surprises you by the ease with which he plays the cool-as-a-cucumber keyboardist.

Prachi Desai – almost looking like Penelope Cruz – is eye-grabbing and delivers an impressive performance while Koel Purie hardly has a role to write about.

Being a movie about a rock band, ‘Rock On’ obviously has a number of songs, some of which are quite catchy. And the movie has many memorable moments that move you – at times to smiles, and at times to tears. Two of my favourites are when the band plays the cheesy Bollywood track ‘Ashiqui Ke Liye’ in its rock version at a dandia party and the final concert when Aditya sings Joe’s song.

Hats off to Abhishek Kapoor, Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani for giving us a truly entertaining film in all aspects. I’m not going to indulge in fault-finding just for the heck of critically reviewing a movie. It’s the ‘Rock On’ effect that’s rejuvenated me.

Hell, I feel like buying a guitar. But before that, I will catch this movie once again. I suggest you too do so.

Rock On Hindi Movie – Music Review

Let’s directly get to the point. Mid-way through Rock On!!, you end up rubbing your eyes (and also your ears) in disbelief. And by the time one is through the 9 song ordeal of Rock On!!, you start wondering whether it indeed had Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy at their spirited best when they were composing for this film which marks the debut of Farhan Akhtar as an actor.

Rock On also marks the debut of Farhan Akhtar as a singer who is heard in as many as 5 tracks. First to come is ‘Socha Hai‘ which is about questioning the basic facts about life and nature around mankind. As required by the setting of the film, ‘Socha Hai’ gives a rock beginning to the album. However, it is a strong sense of deja vu that one gets to hear since there have been innumerous examples of tunes and arrangements like these that one has heard in Pakistani rock albums in the last few years. Farhan does a fine job behind the mike as one looks forward to what else does he have in store in songs to come.

Yet again, it’s the sound of electronic guitar which opens ‘Pichle Saat Dinon Mein‘. Though the rhythm of ‘Na Na Na Na Na’ does aid in giving a rhythm to the track, it’s unconventional lyrics (though going by the mood of the rock genre and the concert setting) are the kind that would only work for a very restricted set of audience. Farhan is heard solo yet again in this track that is repeated towards the end of the album as a LIVE performance. Seemingly a track that should make for a climax setting, it has its chances if only the visuals are well directed to create a euphoric atmosphere.

It’s the sound of the background music which ran behind Hrithik Roshan in Lakshya that forms the basic rhythm of the title song ‘Rock On!!’. The number tries to amalgamate the ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ feel with the rock mood of the film but sadly the end result doesn’t really make you jump with joy. Though ‘Rock On!!’ has been the chosen one for the initial round of the film’s promotion, it surprisingly doesn’t come with the kind of zing that one expected from the flagship number of the albu

Surprisingly, respite comes in a number which goes soft instead of blazing hard on the ears, something which was the case in the songs preceding this one. Dominique Carejo has been around for last few years and the lady has delivered whenever given an opportunity, whether for English or a Hindi song. ‘Ye Tumhari Meri Baatein‘ is an out and out Hindi number and it’s soft rock feel with minimal arrangements in the background make you long for a candle light dinner with the song being performed live in the background. Of course, this number too has a restricted market for itself due to an urban feel and setting but one doesn’t mind giving it a few more hearings.

Now this one is really one of the biggest disappointments of Rock On!!. A number with lyrics like ‘Yahan Pe Saanp Baste Hai, Sabko Saanp Daste Hai’ can’t really be taken seriously for making inroads into popular segments. Well, believe it or not but there is a song like this that has been titled ‘Zehreeley’ and it is such an assault on your ears that you want to move on to the next number (or rather even end of the album) without spending any more seconds into it. A full on rock track, it surprisingly sees full-throated rendition by Suraj Jagan who was quite a find when heard last in the title song of Johnny Gaddaar.

Farhan Akhtar returns to the scene with ‘Tum Ho Toh’ which perhaps has been placed at just the right juncture in the album. After a noisy ‘Zehreeley’, ‘Tum Ho Toh’ is a soft outing, though still sticking to the film’s setting. Yes, the number is easy going with Farhan doing well again but still it warrants a restricted audience for itself. What follows next is an inspirational number that takes its reference point from ‘Sindbad The Sailor‘ who fought all odds to reach his destination. Farhan Akhtar comes behind the mike with Raman Mahadevan and together they jam up the show to create something unconventional yet again. Well, one would rather wait to see how visuals take this number forward which can’t be expected to come on the lips of one and all!

Finally comes ‘Phir Dekhiye’ which has another good singer, Caralisa Monteiro, going solo with her rendition. With just a guitar in the background, this number about being positive in life has Caralisa holding the center stage throughout the 3 minute outing. Thankfully, this one acts as a respite for ears, just like Dominique’s ‘Source - bollywoodhungama.com
